Family trips or group vacations can be very expensive. Staying at a hotel with a with a family of six that requires that you rent three rooms in the Gatlinburg, Tennessee area will probably run you at least $300 per night. If you are taking the vacation with three families in similar situations then the bill quickly jumps to $900 per night. A stay of four nights will run you $3,600 alone - without even including food, souvenirs, day trips, or transportation. This can make your vacation very expensive!
Recently my family and I experienced this reality first hand. We made a trip out to Gatlinburg with two other families to enjoy the pleasant scenery, interesting attractions, and good food. In total we had 15 people and one dog to house and feed. Luckily, my wife and I were taken as guests so our expenses were completely paid for by our relatives. However, being a second-hand observer of the living conditions gave me an interesting perspective on the vacation experience.
If this group of people had stayed at a hotel we would have needed seven rooms to handle all the different people. That would have made our trip cost at least $700 per night, with a trip total of $2,800 four our four night stay. That is a total of$186 per person for the entire trip.
To put these numbers into perspective, $2,800 is 20% of what a minimum wage earner will take home over the course of an entire year. That means all of January, February, and half of March they would spend earning the money to pay off this vacation. And that does not even include food.
Fortunately, our group did not stay at a hotel. We chose to go with one of the many Gatlinburg cabin rentals.
The organizers of our party chose a three bedroom, three story cabin that easily housed all 15 of us.We used the four couches, three king sized beds, and one air mattress to sleep four married couples and seven young adults.A straw poll of those staying with us concluded that our stay was very comfortable and the sleeping conditions inside our Gatlinburg cabin were excellent.
What was the price tag for the entire stay in the cabin?$1,505 - that is 46% less than a stay at a hotel would have been. We spent about $100 per person to sleep in the cabin, or $25 per person per night.
However, saving on your lodging expense is not the only advantage of choosing from the Gatlinburg cabin rentals available. One of the major savings we experienced was through the ability to purchase and cook our own food. We ate breakfasts and a few dinners at our cabin, saving us a ton of money by directing us away from eating at expensive restaurants or unhealthy fast food joints. We probably even ate better than at a restaurant and were not constrained by our tables and chairs from socializing with other members of the group. We could be as loud as we wanted without worrying about bothering other patrons. It was a real pleasure.
The other benefit we experienced in our cabin was the ability to entertain ourselves for ‘free.’ The cabin had a card table, foogasball table, air hockey, a pool table, and a Jacuzzi - all for our exclusive use. At a hotel we would have had to compete with other customers for the use of these items if they even had them. If they did not we would have to have forked out additional money in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge to enjoy this type of entertainment.
Going with a cabin rental was definitely the way to go for our large party. Our simple though spacious three bedroom cabin housed comfortably, meeting many of our entertainment and dinning needs. It was a fine vacation worthy of a repeat.
